I dreamt I dwelt in Marble Halls

A popular song from an Opera, "The Bohemian Girl", which is so appropriate for the Gilded Age.
Click HERE to listen to a clip and a slideshow on YouTube.

Here are the lyrics,

I dreamt I dwelt in marble halls With vassals and serfs at my side. And of all who assembled within those walls That I was the hope and the pride.
I had riches too great to count, could boast Of a high ancestral name. But I also dreamt, which pleased me most That you lov'd me still the same, That you lov'd me, you lov'd me still the same, That you lov'd me, You loved me still the same.
I dreamt that suitors sought my hand. That knights upon bended knee, And with vows no maiden's heart could withstand, They pledg'd their faith to me.
And I dreamt that one of that noble host Came forth my hand to claim. But I also dreamt, which charmed me most That you lov'd me still the same, That you lov'd me, you lov'd me still the same, That you lov'd me, you loved me still the same.

The Saga of American Society by Dexter Wecter

The Saga of American Society by Dixon Wecter.

This is one of the great classic books written about America's Gilded Age. It is available to read online at Internet Archive, but I would also recommend buying it or taking it out of your library. It has some wonderful illustrations, which do not show up well on the Internet Archive scans. Below are some of the sources that you can read or find the book to buy. This list is also wonderful to search for other rare books. Google Books does not have this as a preview, but do use the site to find other books. Just click on eBook for complete copies to read.
